Choquequirao

Peru Vilcabamba Range Central Andes

Hard to pick a favorite but this just might be it. Starting with a hitch in the back of a truck to get to the trailhead, then two days to get to the Choquequirao archaeological site. Not quite Machu Picchu in scale but pretty darn close, and 1/1000 of the crowds. Explored the site alone for a few hours without seeing anyone else. Most famous for the llama stone terrace.

From there another two days to link up with Salkantay, and four days more to Machu Picchu. Highest point Yanama Pass at 4,668m. Was a mix of back country and village stays, so you could get hot meals (like guinea pig) and even a shower on some nights if needed. And being on the Inca trail there were bunch of other smaller archaeological sites that were cool to explore.

Aside from the historical and cultural part, the Andes were just incredible. Nothing comes close to capturing the expansiveness of the valleys and eerieness of the passes.
