El Chaltén Border Crossing

An early morning boat ride and a full day’s hike will take you from Villa O’higgins at the end of the Carretera Austral in Chile to the edge of El Chaltén, the hiking hub in Argentina. Most who do the crossing stay the night at lakes edge with a view of Fitz Roy. It’s just over the Argentine border, with the immigration office and lodge just up the hill. Lots of bikepackers on this route touring south.
